A devastating overnight shooting in Baltimore, Maryland, has claimed the lives of two individuals and left 28 others wounded. Authorities are urging the public to cooperate with the investigation and provide any information that could lead to the apprehension of those responsible.
Mayor Brandon M. Scott condemned the incident as a "reckless, cowardly act of violence" that has profoundly impacted numerous lives. He vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The shooting occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday in the Brooklyn neighborhood of South Baltimore. Acting Police Commissioner Richard Worley stated that officers initially discovered ten victims at the scene, including an 18-year-old female who tragically died at the scene. Nine other individuals were transported to nearby hospitals. Subsequently, 20 more victims sought medical attention at various hospitals, bringing the total number of injured to 28.
All 30 victims, ranging in age from 13 to 32, sustained gunshot wounds. A 20-year-old male later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital. As of Sunday afternoon, nine victims remained hospitalized in varying conditions.
The incident unfolded during an unsanctioned gathering in the Brooklyn Homes area. Acting Commissioner Worley confirmed that multiple individuals opened fire, although the exact number remains unknown. No suspects are currently in custody. The extensive crime scene spans multiple blocks, and investigators, aided by K-9 units, continue to gather evidence, including shell casings from various firearms.
Mayor Scott characterized the shooting as a stark illustration of the pervasive issue of gun violence plaguing Baltimore, Maryland, and the nation as a whole. He highlighted the ease of access to illegal firearms, noting that Baltimore police have confiscated 1,345 illegal guns this year alone.
Authorities are appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone with information is urged to contact 911 or Metro Crime Stoppers. Individuals with Ring doorbell cameras or other recordings that might be relevant to the investigation are also encouraged to come forward.
