In a tragic incident, Greenville, Texas police officer Cooper Dawson was fatally shot Monday evening during a shootout with a suspect he was pursuing on foot. The incident occurred around 7:40 p.m. in a wooded area behind residences on Picket Street, approximately 50 miles northeast of Dallas.
The confrontation began with a traffic stop initiated by Officer Dawson. The suspect fled the vehicle, leading Dawson on a foot chase into the wooded area. There, the suspect ambushed the officer, firing multiple shots and striking him in the side and leg. Despite his severe injuries, Officer Dawson bravely returned fire, hitting the suspect.
Both Dawson and the suspect were taken to Hunt County Regional Hospital. Dawson was subsequently airlifted to Medical City Plano, where he succumbed to his injuries. The suspect's condition and identity remain undisclosed at this time.
News footage from the scene showed a heavy police presence and a white sedan parked near the cordoned-off area. It's unclear whether the sedan was connected to the initial traffic stop.
The Greenville Police Department described Dawson as a highly respected officer, previously serving with the Garland Police Department. His commitment to protecting the community and his ultimate sacrifice will be remembered. Chief Chris Smith expressed the department's profound grief, requesting prayers for Dawson's family, the department, and the Greenville community.
Officer Dawson is the first Greenville police officer to die in the line of duty in over a century. The Texas Rangers are conducting an independent investigation into the incident. Information regarding memorial services and support for Officer Dawson's family will be released in the coming days. A squad car is being displayed at the police precinct in his honor.
