Sarah McBride Launches Historic Bid for US Congress

Former Delaware state Senator Sarah McBride has formally announced her candidacy for the U.S. House of Representatives, aiming to become the first transgender person elected to Congress. McBride, who made history in 2020 as the first openly transgender state senator in U.S. history, emphasizes the importance of diverse representation in government.

In an interview with Delaware Online, McBride stated that a diverse government is crucial for a thriving democracy and effectively serving the needs of all citizens. While acknowledging the historical significance of her candidacy, McBride emphasized her focus on representing the interests of all Delawareans, regardless of background.

McBride's campaign launch coincides with ongoing national debates surrounding transgender rights and policies, particularly those affecting minors. Several states have recently enacted laws restricting or prohibiting gender-affirming care for minors, sparking controversy and legal challenges. The issue of transgender athletes' participation in sports has also fueled debate, with some advocating for competition based on biological sex assigned at birth.

McBride characterizes these legislative efforts as "far-right extremism" and has expressed concern about the targeting of the LGBTQ+ community. On Twitter, she stated that the far-right has attempted to scapegoat the LGBTQ+ community for their political shortcomings. She reiterated her belief that a functioning democracy must be inclusive of everyone and that her presence in Congress would contribute to this goal.
