Tennessee Hand Surgeon Fatally Shot by Patient in Targeted Attack

In a tragic incident, renowned Tennessee hand surgeon Dr. Benjamin Mauck was fatally shot by a patient during an examination. The incident, which took place at Campbell Clinic Orthopaedics in Collierville, has left the medical community and the local community in shock and mourning.

According to an affidavit, a nurse practitioner present in the exam room witnessed 29-year-old Larry Pickens draw a pistol and fire three shots at Dr. Mauck. Dr. Mauck, 43, was found with gunshot wounds to his neck, chest, and abdomen. Authorities swiftly apprehended Pickens near the clinic. He was in possession of a handgun and empty magazines.

The Collierville Police Department has classified this as a targeted attack, emphasizing that no other individuals at the clinic were harmed. The motive behind the shooting remains undisclosed.

Dr. Mauck was a highly respected surgeon specializing in congenital hand deformities, particularly in children. He was praised for his expertise and dedication to his patients. He leaves behind a wife and two young children. His family released a statement expressing their grief and requesting privacy during this difficult time. They chose to highlight Dr. Mauck’s positive contributions to the world, both professionally and personally.

Pickens has been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated assault and is currently held on a $1.2 million bond. The Campbell Clinic Orthopaedics closed temporarily to honor Dr. Mauck and reopened the following day. The clinic released a statement expressing their shock and heartbreak over the loss of their esteemed colleague.

Dr. Mauck was recently featured in Memphis Magazine as one of the 2023's Top Doctors. He was known for his meticulous approach to surgery and his passion for helping children with complex hand conditions. He also directed the congenital hand clinic at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, where he treated numerous pediatric patients each month.
