Vatican officials confirmed that Pope Francis was admitted to the Gemelli Polyclinic on Friday for treatment of bronchitis, a condition he has reportedly been managing for a week. The 88-year-old pontiff carried out his morning audiences before being hospitalized. CNN CEO Mark Thompson, among those who met with the Pope, later reported that while mentally sharp, the Pope was experiencing difficulty speaking for prolonged periods due to breathing problems.
In addition to receiving treatment for bronchitis, the Pope is also scheduled to undergo diagnostic testing at the hospital.

The Pope's health has been a topic of concern in recent years. He underwent surgeries in both 2021 and 2023 and has been managing chronic knee problems that necessitate the use of a wheelchair. In his autobiography published earlier this year, Pope Francis attributed his health challenges to his advanced age, emphasizing that leadership in the Church relies on intellect and compassion, not physical mobility.

Last month, the Vatican confirmed that Pope Francis suffered an arm contusion after a fall at his residence. His arm was immobilized as a precaution. This incident followed another fall just weeks prior where he sustained a facial injury.

Despite his past criticisms of former President Donald Trump, Pope Francis offered him "cordial greetings" ahead of his potential return to the presidency.
