Reclaiming Your Privacy: How to Control Google's Location Tracking in Photos

Google Photos offers a convenient way to store and organize pictures, but it also has a lesser-known feature that maps your photo locations, essentially creating a personal travelogue accessible to anyone who gains access to your phone or Google account. While this can be a fun way to revisit past trips, it also raises privacy concerns. This article provides a comprehensive guide on how to manage and disable Google's location tracking within the Photos app.

Understanding Google's Photo Tracking

Google can track your movements through the photos you take if you've enabled location services. This data allows Google to analyze and process information within your images. While location data can enhance features like search and organization, it's crucial to understand how to control these settings if you value your privacy.

Managing Location Data in Google Photos (iPhone & Android)

To view your photo locations:

  • Open the Google Photos app.
  • Tap Search at the bottom.
  • Under Places, you'll find Your Map displaying photo locations.

To adjust location settings:

  • Open Google Photos.
  • Tap your profile picture (or initials).
  • Select Photos settings.
  • Tap Location.

Here you’ll find two key options:

  • Photos with location: Displays all photos with location data.
  • Location sources: Shows how photos acquire location data, including camera settings and estimated locations. You can disable Estimate missing locations to prevent Google from using landmarks and location history to guess where photos were taken.

To remove or add estimated locations for individual photos:

  • Select the photo.
  • Tap the three dots (more options).
  • Find the estimated location and tap the pencil icon to edit or remove it.
