Federal Agencies Investigate Columbia University Over Antisemitism Concerns

Following concerns about insufficient protection of Jewish students during anti-Israel protests, Columbia University faces scrutiny from three federal agencies. The Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Education, and the U.S. General Services Administration will review the university's federal contracts and grants. Columbia has pledged commitment to combating antisemitism and working with the administration to address the issue. The university stated its dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of its students, faculty, and staff while rejecting violence and terror on campus.

This investigation follows Linda McMahon's Senate confirmation as Education Secretary. McMahon, echoing President Trump's concerns, has prioritized addressing campus antisemitism and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. She criticized the university's handling of the situation, highlighting the disruption of campus activities and the harassment faced by Jewish students. McMahon emphasized the responsibility of educational institutions, especially those receiving federal funding, to protect students from discrimination.

The General Services Administration will oversee the review of Columbia's federal funding. Commissioner Josh Gruenbaum stressed the importance of upholding federal acquisition standards and ensuring that government contracts align with national values, including combating antisemitism. He emphasized the administration's zero-tolerance policy towards antisemitism in higher education institutions.

The investigation stems from a recent incident where Columbia students occupied a Barnard College building, protesting the expulsion of two students who disrupted an Israeli history class and distributed antisemitic flyers. During the protest, security guards were allegedly assaulted, resulting in one hospitalization and over $30,000 in damages.
