Less than two months after the heartbreaking loss of his 2-year-old daughter in a drowning accident, Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Shaquil Barrett has shown incredible strength by returning to practice. Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles commended Barrett's resilience, acknowledging the difficulty of the situation while praising his mental fortitude.
Barrett, whose previous season was prematurely ended by a torn Achilles in Week 8, was present at the Bucs' mandatory minicamp this week. While he hasn't fully participated in practice yet, his presence alone speaks volumes. "That’s a testament to him," Bowles remarked to reporters. "Shaq is one of the mentally toughest character guys I know. To have him out here still trying to get ready — I’m sure it’s not easy — but he’s handling it, and we’re behind him."
In April, Barrett's daughter, Arrayah, tragically drowned in the family's swimming pool. First responders transported her to a hospital, where she was pronounced deceased. The Buccaneers organization offered their condolences and support to the Barrett family in a statement following the incident, expressing the profound sorrow felt by the entire team.
At 30 years old, Barrett is entering his fifth season with the Buccaneers. Despite his shortened season last year, he managed 31 tackles and three sacks in eight games. His career also includes two Super Bowl victories, one of which came with the Denver Broncos in 2016.
