Abigail Disney, Heiress and Activist, Arrested Protesting Private Jet Use in Climate Demonstration

Abigail Disney, heiress to the Disney fortune, was arrested alongside other climate activists on Friday for blockading the East Hampton Airport in Wainscott, New York. The protest, aimed at disrupting private jet travel, was organized to highlight the environmental impact of the wealthy and their contribution to the climate crisis.

The demonstration was a joint effort involving New York Communities for Change, Planet Over Profit, and Sunrise Movement NYC. These groups are protesting what they describe as the excessive greenhouse gas emissions produced by the wealthiest individuals, particularly through the use of private jets. Disney, in a statement, acknowledged the difficulty of giving up such a luxury but emphasized the urgency of addressing climate change, citing recent extreme weather events as evidence.

The East Hampton Airport, which caters to private and charter flights, was chosen as the target due to its location in the Hamptons, a popular destination for affluent individuals. Fellow activist Teddy Ogborn echoed Disney's sentiments, criticizing the wealthy for profiting from industries that contribute to climate change while enjoying lavish lifestyles. He pledged continued action against these individuals until significant changes are made.

This protest is the first of several planned actions in the Hamptons. A "Tax the Rich for Climate Justice" march is scheduled for Saturday, followed by a protest near the Sebonack Golf Course on Sunday, and a rally outside a Citibank board member's home on Monday. These demonstrations reflect a broader trend of disruptive climate activism aimed at pressuring leaders to take stronger action against global warming.
