Following the tragic loss of the Titan submersible and its five passengers near the Titanic wreckage, the U.S. Coast Guard has initiated a Marine Board of Investigation (MBI). The principal aim of this investigation, according to Chief Investigator Jason Neubauer, is to prevent future incidents by recommending safety improvements for maritime operations globally.
The submersible debris was located approximately 1,600 feet from the Titanic on the North Atlantic ocean floor after a multinational search effort. The MBI is currently in its initial phase, focusing on gathering evidence, including debris retrieval at the site and collaborating with Canadian authorities in Newfoundland.
The MBI also has the authority to recommend civil or criminal sanctions if deemed necessary. The Titan, towed by the Polar Prince, departed Newfoundland on June 16th with 41 individuals on board, including 17 crew members and 24 others. The submersible tragically imploded during its descent to the Titanic, resulting in the death of all five occupants.
Authorities from both the U.S. and Canada are investigating the implosion's cause and working to determine responsibility for the tragic incident. The Navy continues to provide support to the Coast Guard’s ongoing operations.
