Celebrating the Fourth of July, Kevin Costner shared a patriotic message on Instagram, reflecting on his career exploring American history and expressing hope for the nation's future. The post featured an image of Costner carrying the American flag in a scene from his directorial debut and Oscar-winning film, "Dances With Wolves."
Costner, 68, acknowledged both the positive and negative aspects of America's past, emphasizing his hope for continued progress toward a "more perfect Union." In "Dances With Wolves," he portrayed Union Army Lieutenant John Dunbar, who forms a bond with a Lakota tribe during his journey across the American frontier.

The film, which Costner directed and produced, is credited with revitalizing the Western genre. It garnered 12 Academy Award nominations and won seven, including Best Picture and Best Director for Costner. In 2007, the Library of Congress recognized its cultural and historical significance by adding it to the National Film Registry.

Currently, Costner is immersed in his latest Western project, "Horizon: An American Saga," which he is directing. The film will depict a 15-year period surrounding the Civil War, focusing on the westward expansion and settlement of the American West.

This new venture comes amidst personal changes for Costner, whose 18-year marriage to Christine Baumgartner recently ended. Baumgartner filed for divorce in May, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple has three children and a custody hearing is scheduled.
