In a tragic incident in southwestern Indiana, a man was found deceased inside a tent after a sheriff's deputy discharged their rifle in response to a gunshot heard emanating from within. The incident unfolded as deputies from Greene and Monroe Counties were pursuing a suspect linked to an earlier shooting in Bloomington. They located the suspect's vehicle in Owensburg around 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Upon exiting their vehicles, deputies reported hearing a gunshot from a tent in the vicinity and immediately sought cover. A Greene County deputy then fired their rifle towards the tent. Inside, authorities discovered the body of the deceased man.

Sheriff George Dallaire of Greene County has requested the Indiana State Police to conduct a thorough investigation into the shooting. Following the investigation, a comprehensive report will be submitted to the Greene County prosecutor's office for review. As is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings resulting in a fatality, the involved deputies have been placed on administrative leave. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is concurrently investigating the initial shooting that occurred in Bloomington. Details regarding that incident have yet to be released. Owensburg is situated approximately 75 miles southwest of Indianapolis.
