The University of New Mexico is currently investigating an alleged physical altercation between two members of its men's basketball team. The incident reportedly occurred on a flight to Palm Springs for the Acrisure Classic tournament just before Thanksgiving.
Reports indicate a walk-on player was allegedly punched in the shoulder by a scholarship player following a dispute over seating arrangements. The walk-on's family claims the injured shoulder was already in a sling at the time of the incident and required subsequent treatment at an Albuquerque hospital upon the team's return. They further allege a second incident involving the same players occurred at the team hotel later that day.
While the coaching staff was reportedly informed, the family contends no action was taken. Furthermore, an attorney for the walk-on player claims the scholarship player participated in two games following the alleged altercation. The university has released a statement confirming the ongoing investigation and their commitment to addressing any misconduct appropriately, but declined to provide specifics citing FERPA regulations.
Head coach Richard Pitino acknowledged the situation in a press conference but refrained from sharing details, stating disciplinary actions are being handled internally.
