Following a federal indictment on 37 counts related to mishandling classified documents, former President Donald Trump has publicly denounced the charges, labeling them a politically motivated attack. Speaking at the Georgia Republican state convention, Trump criticized the Justice Department for what he perceives as disparate treatment of Republicans versus Democrats, stating, "Republicans are treated far differently at the Justice Department than Democrats." He further characterized the indictment as a "political hit job" orchestrated by a "thug" currently in power.

The charges against Trump encompass willful retention of national defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and making false statements. The indictment alleges that Trump refused to return classified documents, some detailing sensitive national security information like plans for a retaliatory attack, U.S. defense capabilities, and nuclear program specifics. These documents were reportedly stored in insecure locations, including a bathroom, at his Mar-a-Lago residence. The indictment further claims Trump showed off these documents to visitors, remarking that as president, he could have declassified the material.
Trump is also accused of instructing an aide to relocate boxes of documents sought by a grand jury subpoena, despite claiming full cooperation. The FBI initiated a criminal investigation into this matter in March 2022. Trump, his supporters, and even some fellow 2024 presidential hopefuls have echoed his claims of political bias, drawing comparisons to what they consider lenient treatment of Democrats accused of more serious offenses.

Trump directly accused President Biden of attempting to imprison his chief political rival, drawing parallels to authoritarian regimes. Biden, however, maintains he has not interfered with the Justice Department's investigation. This indictment further complicates Trump's re-election campaign, adding to the legal challenges he faces following an earlier indictment in New York related to an alleged hush-money scheme. Trump's initial federal court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday. Notably, other Republican candidates, including those critical of Trump, have largely refrained from attacking him regarding the indictment, sharing the view that the prosecution is politically driven.
Trump framed the upcoming election as a battle between the "deep state" and democracy, asserting that either one will prevail. He emphasized the high stakes of the election, stating, "They win or we win. It's very simple."
