A Syrian national has been found guilty of war crimes and other offenses by a Berlin court for his involvement with the Islamic State group in Syria. The 32-year-old, identified as Raed E. to comply with German privacy regulations, was sentenced to 11 years in prison. The court determined that he joined ISIS in 2014 and took part in attacks against the Shueitat tribe in eastern Syria's Deir el-Zour region, including the brutal torture of a captive who later testified against him. Raed E. fled Syria in 2015 and eventually arrived in Germany, where authorities apprehended him in 2022. The conviction is subject to appeal.
