Dane County, Wisconsin Considers Sanctuary Status for Transgender and Non-Binary Individuals

Dane County, Wisconsin, home to the state's capital, Madison, is contemplating a resolution to become a sanctuary for individuals who identify as transgender or non-binary, including children. The Dane County Board of Supervisors is scheduled to vote on the resolution this Thursday.

The resolution emphasizes the county's belief in protecting transgender and non-binary individuals and asserts access to healthcare, including gender-affirming care, as a fundamental right. It underscores the county's opposition to any measures that could permit legal actions against transgender individuals seeking or providing such care.

The resolution specifically urges the county sheriff to deprioritize enforcement if Wisconsin passes any law penalizing individuals or organizations involved in providing or receiving gender-affirming care, such as puberty blockers, hormones, or surgery. It aims to establish Dane County as a safe haven for transgender children, adults, and their families.

The resolution also encourages local school boards to adopt similar protective measures and plans to share copies with Governor Tony Evers, state and local legislators, and other officials. Twenty of the county's 37 supervisors are sponsoring the resolution, which, if approved, would align Dane County with similar sanctuary declarations in cities like Austin and Kansas City, Missouri.
