Former NFL player and Texas lawmaker, Scott Turner, has been confirmed by the Senate as the new Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The confirmation vote, which took place later this week, saw Turner receive bipartisan support, with several Democrats joining Republicans in approving his nomination.

Turner's confirmation comes after President Trump's announcement of his nomination following the November election. He succeeds Dr. Ben Carson, who held the position during Trump's previous term.

Turner's impressive nine-season career in the NFL as a defensive back included stints with the Washington Redskins, San Diego Chargers, and Denver Broncos. Following his football career, he transitioned into public service, serving in the Texas legislature.

President Trump highlighted Turner's significant contributions during his previous administration as the First Executive Director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council (WHORC). Trump praised Turner's leadership in revitalizing distressed communities, overseeing multiple federal agencies, and implementing numerous policy actions that spurred economic growth. He specifically mentioned Turner's role in attracting over $50 billion in private investment to Opportunity Zones, working alongside former HUD Secretary Ben Carson.

During his confirmation hearing before the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, Turner emphasized his commitment to reforming ineffective policies and empowering Americans to achieve self-sufficiency. He expressed his desire to help individuals transition away from government assistance and realize the American dream.
