The film generated controversy due to a nude scene involving the then-16-year-old Hussey and her co-star, Leonard Whiting. Hussey maintained that the scene was handled tastefully, noting differing cultural perspectives on nudity at the time. Despite the controversy, "Romeo and Juliet" garnered two Oscars, and Hussey received a Golden Globe for Best New Actress.
