Nike Stands by Ja Morant Despite 25-Game Suspension

Despite a 25-game suspension handed down by the NBA for a second gun-related incident, Ja Morant's shoe deal with Nike appears to be safe. ESPN reported that the athletic apparel giant plans to "continue to support" the 23-year-old Memphis Grizzlies star.

Nike's statement, released via tweet by ESPN's Ramona Shelburne, expressed satisfaction with Morant's acceptance of responsibility and focus on his well-being. This follows a May 13 social media video where Morant briefly displayed a firearm, leading to the suspension which prohibits him from participating in any public league or team activities, including preseason games.

This isn't the first time Morant has faced consequences for gun-related behavior. An earlier eight-game suspension resulted from an Instagram Live video showing him with a handgun in a Denver nightclub. Following that incident, Nike also expressed support for Morant and his focus on his well-being, though they temporarily removed his signature "Hunger" sneakers from their website before making them available again.

Morant issued a public apology, expressing remorse for the harm he caused and promising to improve both on and off the court. He specifically addressed the NBA, the Grizzlies organization, his teammates, the city of Memphis, his fans, and his sponsors. He pledged to dedicate his suspension period to working on his mental health and decision-making, as well as preparing for his return to basketball.

The initial release of Morant's signature "Ja 1 Hunger" shoes sold out quickly after becoming available in May, demonstrating continued interest in his brand despite the controversies. Morant signed his five-year deal with Nike in 2019 shortly before being drafted second overall.
