Jason Aldean's "Try That in a Small Town" Stirs Controversy

Country music star Jason Aldean's latest music video for "Try That in a Small Town" has ignited a firestorm of debate. The video, featuring imagery from the 2020 riots and lyrics that some interpret as a warning to criminals, has drawn criticism from various activists and commentators.

The song's message, which emphasizes self-reliance and a strong stance against lawlessness, has resonated with many, but others have accused Aldean of promoting violence and racism. Critics point to the lyrics about taking care of "our own" and crossing "that line" as potentially inciting vigilantism.

Gun control advocate Shannon Watts, of Moms Demand Action, criticized the song, referencing Aldean's presence on stage during the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting. Social justice activist Brittany Packnett Cunningham also weighed in, arguing that the song misrepresents the reality of gun violence in small towns and serves as a "racist dog whistle."

Further controversy arose when Mississippi Free Press news editor Ashton Pittman highlighted the music video's filming location – the site of a historical lynching. This choice of location has been condemned as insensitive and inflammatory.

This isn't the first time Aldean has faced backlash for his views. In 2021, he defended his family's decision to wear anti-Biden merchandise, declaring he would "never apologize" for his beliefs. The singer has maintained a defiant stance in the face of criticism, emphasizing his love for his family and country.
