An illicit fireworks storage facility detonated in the Philippines early Thursday morning, resulting in injuries to at least 18 individuals and causing structural damage to nearby residences. The blast, which occurred around 2:10 a.m., sent shockwaves through the surrounding neighborhood, rattling buildings and shattering windows. Some residents reported witnessing sparks from electrical wiring outside the warehouse just prior to the explosion.
The resulting fire damaged or destroyed numerous homes in the vicinity. According to fire officials, 16 houses were destroyed, seven sustained partial damage, and 22 experienced minor damage. While 18 residents suffered minor injuries, three individuals sought hospital care for hypertension related issues, while others received on-site medical assistance.
Authorities have confirmed the illegal nature of the warehouse, emphasizing that such facilities are prohibited near residential areas. Senior Inspector Earl Carlo Mariano stated, "The warehouse was located near homes, which is not allowed. We do not allow fireworks factories to be built near residential areas." The explosion consumed the stored fireworks and other chemicals within the warehouse. Firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze around 5:00 a.m.
Local officials expressed concern over the unauthorized operation of the warehouse. Captain Lauro Tuazon Jr., the Bunducan district council chief, stated, "If we had known it was a fireworks storehouse, we would have closed it down since it is sitting in a residential area. Probably, the owners hid it so they could earn a living. They thought it would be good for them, but this is what happened." An investigation will be conducted to determine the precise cause of the explosion and identify the warehouse's owners, who are reportedly known by the name Nenita Oprecio.
One resident, Macy Baylon, recounted her initial perception of the incident, stating she mistook it for lightning captured by her security camera. She later discovered the extent of the damage after hearing commotion outside and being alerted by her brother.
This incident marks the second illegal fireworks warehouse explosion in the Philippines in under a year. A similar event in Laguna province last November claimed five lives, injured four, and caused approximately $25,000 in damages.
