Hinson Downplays Impact of Abortion, Trump on 2024 GOP Prospects

Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA) believes that neither abortion nor former President Donald Trump will significantly hinder Republican turnout in the upcoming 2024 congressional and presidential elections. Despite some polls suggesting a Republican “red wave” didn’t materialize in 2022 partly due to the Supreme Court's abortion decision, Hinson downplays this concern.

Speaking at a Winning For Women PAC fundraiser, Hinson told Fox News Digital that the media overemphasized the abortion issue's impact in 2022. Referencing her own reelection in Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District, she noted winning by a larger margin despite over a million dollars spent by opponents attacking her stance on abortion. She argues that voters consider a range of issues, not just abortion.

Hinson, who flipped a Democratic seat in 2020 and won her 2022 reelection by a substantial margin, emphasized her focus on “kitchen table issues” that resonate with constituents. While affirming her pro-life stance, she stresses the importance of addressing the everyday concerns of Iowans.

Regarding Trump, Hinson believes that swing voters, particularly suburban women, will continue to support Republicans due to dissatisfaction with President Biden's policies. She points to congressional disapproval of several Biden administration initiatives, including solar panel policies and the student loan forgiveness program, as evidence of this discontent.

Hinson contends that regardless of the Republican presidential nominee, the contrast with Biden's performance on issues like border security, the economy, the Afghanistan withdrawal, and trade policy will drive Republican turnout. She highlighted the Congressional Review Act as a tool used by Congress to counter the administration's actions.

Hinson believes the GOP can continue to gain ground in the suburbs by focusing on everyday concerns and diversifying its candidates. The Winning for Women fundraiser, which raised over $800,000, exemplifies this strategy by supporting candidates who connect with voters on these key issues.
