The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's absence from the Trooping the Colour ceremony has sparked discussion among royal commentators, many of whom believe their non-attendance is for the best. People magazine reported that the couple was not invited to the King's birthday celebration, a significant event marking Charles's first Trooping the Colour as monarch.
Royal biographer Christopher Andersen highlighted the changed dynamic since Harry and Meghan stepped down as working royals. He noted their exclusion from the Buckingham Palace balcony alongside Prince Andrew, emphasizing King Charles's focus on trusted figures like Queen Camilla, Princess Anne, Prince Edward, Sophie, and the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children. Andersen speculated about the public's reaction to seeing the Wales children, anticipating surprise at their growth.

Andersen expressed sadness over Archie and Lilibet's absence but interpreted Charles's decision as a clear signal of his reluctance to reconcile with Harry, particularly given the event's importance. He recalled the Sussexes' low-key appearance at the 2022 Trooping the Colour, Queen Elizabeth's final one, and the likely sting of their exclusion from the balcony, a lifelong tradition for Harry until then.

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams saw no reason for an invitation following the Sussexes' tell-all interviews, Netflix series, and Harry's memoir, viewing their actions as a breach with the royal family. He referenced Harry's recent court appearance against the Daily Mirror and his stay at Frogmore Cottage, from which the couple was asked to vacate.

Fitzwilliams emphasized the seemingly irreparable rift, noting Harry's swift return to California after the coronation, only attending for his son's birthday. The Duke and Duchess were last seen with the royal family at the queen's funeral. This year's parade, including a Royal Air Force flyby, holds special significance for Harry, a decorated veteran of the British Army.

Podcast host Kinsey Schofield believed Harry's presence would be a distraction, suggesting it was acceptable for him to miss the event, recalling the couple's feeling of exclusion at previous royal gatherings. She saw Harry's role limited to formal occasions like funerals due to his “destructive path.” Royal expert Hilary Fordwich concurred, stating Harry is no longer a key figure in royal affairs.

Royal photographer Helena Chard argued that despite not being a working royal, Harry's position in the line of succession warranted attendance. She questioned his prioritization of legal battles over family events. Chard acknowledged potential tensions and apprehension on Harry's part regarding his reception.

Meghan Markle has maintained a low profile following the alleged paparazzi car chase incident in New York City. The couple is expected to spend Trooping the Colour at their Montecito home with their children.
