The Atlanta Falcons have announced a significant quarterback change, promoting rookie Michael Penix Jr. to the starting role over veteran Kirk Cousins.
Cousins, in the first year of a lucrative four-year, $180 million contract, has struggled mightily in recent weeks. Over his last five games, he has managed only one touchdown pass while throwing nine interceptions, a performance that ultimately led to the Falcons' decision.

The Falcons' selection of Penix with the eighth overall pick in the draft, shortly after signing Cousins, raised eyebrows at the time. Now, with the team needing a spark, they're turning to the young quarterback.
Head coach Raheem Morris confirmed the move in a statement, emphasizing that it was a football decision made in the team's best interest as they prepare for their upcoming game against the New York Giants.
Penix had an impressive final season at the University of Washington, throwing for 4,903 yards, 36 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. His team's only loss that year came in the national championship game against Michigan.

Cousins, now 36, is coming off an Achilles injury suffered last season while playing for the Minnesota Vikings. His performance this season has been inconsistent, starting slow before a mid-season surge. However, his recent slump has proven costly for the Falcons, who have lost their division lead after dropping four consecutive games.

While Cousins' lone touchdown in the past five games came in a win against the Raiders, the Falcons are hoping Penix can provide the offensive consistency they need to regain their winning form.
