In a year marked by political resurgence, personal trials, and a historic election victory, former President Donald Trump has been named TIME magazine's 2024 Person of the Year. The magazine recognized Trump's significant influence on the political landscape, his unprecedented return to power, and his ability to reshape the American presidency.
TIME highlighted Trump's orchestration of a remarkable political comeback, driving a significant political realignment, and altering America's global standing as key reasons for their selection. This marks the second time Trump has received this honor, the first being in 2016 after his initial presidential win. To celebrate, he rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange.
Trump's journey back to the White House was not without its challenges. He overcame two assassination attempts, one in Pennsylvania which left him injured and a supporter dead, and another in Florida which was thwarted by the Secret Service. Images of a bloodied Trump raising his fist in defiance at the Pennsylvania rally became an iconic moment in American political history. Furthermore, he faced legal battles, including a conviction in New York for falsifying business records. Despite these obstacles, Trump secured a decisive victory against Vice President Kamala Harris in the November election, winning both the Electoral College and the popular vote, a feat that stunned Democrats and solidified Republican control of the White House and Congress.
This win makes Trump only the second US president after Grover Cleveland to serve non-consecutive terms. His victory followed a tumultuous campaign season that saw President Biden drop out of the race after a poor debate performance, leaving Harris to take his place. Trump's victory was particularly significant given his increased support from Latino and Black voters, and his inroads in traditionally blue states.
As Trump begins his second term, questions remain about his governing strategy and his ability to deliver on his campaign promises, including tackling inflation, addressing illegal immigration, and managing international relations. His return to the presidency promises a period of significant change and continued political transformation.
Other finalists for TIME's Person of the Year included Kamala Harris, Elon Musk, Joe Rogan, and Benjamin Netanyahu. Last year's recipient was singer Taylor Swift.
