Singer Demi Lovato recently opened up about her evolving relationship with gender identity and pronouns in an interview with GQ Hype Spain. Lovato, who previously adopted they/them pronouns, revealed she has re-embraced she/her pronouns as well, citing the exhaustion of continually explaining her identity to others. While acknowledging the importance of advocating for non-binary identities, she expressed the personal toll it took on her.
Lovato initially came out as non-binary in 2021, choosing to use they/them pronouns. A year later, she added she/her back into her pronoun usage, explaining on the Spout podcast that she had been feeling more feminine recently. She also described feeling a sense of disconnect with traditional gendered bathrooms, expressing that neither "women" nor "men" felt quite right.
This sentiment was reiterated in the GQ Hype Spain interview, where Lovato highlighted the discomfort of using women's restrooms and the limitations of gender options on official forms. She expressed hope for a future with more inclusive and expansive gender choices on official documents and forms.
Lovato also emphasized the importance of respect and understanding in the ongoing conversation about pronouns, acknowledging that mistakes happen and that learning is a continuous process.
