Vatican Investigates Texas Bishop Critical of Pope Francis

An official Vatican investigation has been launched into the Diocese of Tyler, Texas, overseen by Bishop Joseph Strickland. This follows public criticism from Bishop Strickland, who has questioned Pope Francis's adherence to Catholic doctrine. The investigation, termed an "apostolic visitation," occurred last week, as confirmed by diocesan communications director Elizabeth Slaten. Slaten emphasized the confidential nature of the process, declining to provide details about the individuals involved or the specific reasons behind the investigation.

Appointed by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012, Bishop Strickland has gained attention for his public challenges to Church leadership, including the current pope. In a May 12 tweet, he expressed his rejection of what he perceives as Pope Francis's program of undermining the core tenets of the Catholic faith, while still acknowledging him as the Pope. He has also shared content critical of Pope Francis on social media.

Bishop Strickland's past actions include a 2020 statement where he asserted the Catholic Church had weakened under Pope Francis and challenged the pontiff to dismiss him. He has also been a vocal critic of political figures like President Biden, condemning his stance on issues such as taxpayer-funded abortion. In March, he criticized the Biden administration, suggesting the government was nearing collapse.

While the Vatican Embassy in Washington, D.C., and Bishop Strickland have been contacted for comment, neither has provided a statement at this time.
