Former New York Jets defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich recently opened up about his time as interim head coach, attributing the team's disappointing season to a lack of transparency within his coaching staff and his own failure to delegate responsibilities effectively. Ulbrich's comments came during his introductory press conference as the Atlanta Falcons' new defensive coordinator.
Reflecting on his period leading the Jets after Robert Saleh's dismissal, Ulbrich emphasized the importance of honest feedback from coaching staff. He expressed regret for shielding the head coach from crucial information, believing at the time he was protecting Saleh but ultimately hindering the team's progress. Ulbrich stated, "The lack of truth sometimes was really detrimental."

Beyond the lack of open communication, Ulbrich also acknowledged his shortcomings in delegating tasks, particularly his defensive coordinator duties. He admitted to taking on too much in an attempt to maintain continuity, a decision he now recognizes as a mistake. "I should have delegated. I should have given the defensive coordinator responsibilities to someone else," Ulbrich admitted.

Ulbrich's return to Atlanta marks a reunion with the organization where he previously served as an assistant from 2015-2020. He will also be working alongside Raheem Morris once again. Joining Ulbrich in Atlanta is Mike Rutenberg, the Jets' former linebackers coach.
