North Korea Launches Submarine-Launched Missile Amidst Heightened Tensions

North Korea launched a submarine-launched intercontinental ballistic missile (SLBM) on Wednesday, escalating tensions in the region. The South Korean military confirmed the launch near Pyongyang, just days after North Korea warned of "shocking" consequences in response to perceived U.S. reconnaissance activities.

The missile, likely fired on a steep trajectory to avoid neighboring countries, is estimated to have landed in the sea east of the Korean Peninsula, outside Japan's exclusive economic zone. South Korea and the U.S. have strengthened their surveillance and defense posture in response.

This launch follows North Korean accusations of provocative U.S. aerial drills and alleged intrusions into North Korean airspace. Kim Yo Jong, sister of Kim Jong Un, claimed a U.S. spy plane was chased away by North Korean warplanes after entering the North’s exclusive economic zone, warning of potential consequences for such actions.

This latest missile test is part of a series of launches conducted by North Korea this year, continuing a pattern of escalating military demonstrations. In November 2022, North Korea tested an ICBM capable of reaching the U.S. mainland, prompting South Korea to conduct simulated airstrikes in response.
