Trump Jokes About Gretzky as Governor if Canada Becomes 51st State

Following Justin Trudeau's announcement to step down as Canadian Prime Minister, former President Donald Trump has reignited his playful campaign for Canada to become the 51st US state. Trump has even suggested, in jest, that hockey legend Wayne Gretzky could be its governor.

Trump and Gretzky

Speaking at Mar-a-Lago, Trump recounted a conversation with Gretzky, saying, "I asked Wayne, 'Would you be interested in being the governor of Canada?' I couldn't think of anyone better suited for the role." Trump added with a chuckle that while Gretzky didn't seem particularly keen on the idea, he might have been more receptive to statehood. Trump praised Gretzky as "a great friend, a fantastic guy, and truly 'The Great One,' as we call him."

Gretzky was present at Trump's 2024 election victory celebration after the former president defeated Vice President Kamala Harris. Gretzky's son-in-law, Dustin Johnson, participates in the LIV Golf tour, which has held events at Trump-owned golf courses.

Trump first floated the idea of Canada becoming a state earlier in the week, stating on social media that "many Canadians would love to be the 51st state." He added, "Imagine how incredible a combined nation would be!"

Trudeau's resignation comes after growing internal pressure within the Liberal Party and public criticism of his economic policies and his responses to Trump's pronouncements. He will remain in office until a new party leader is chosen. Trudeau has been Prime Minister for almost a decade but has recently faced declining approval ratings due to public concerns about the rising cost of living and inflation.
