A resilient Shepherd mix named Chief is seeking a loving forever home after a challenging journey. This six-year-old, 54-pound canine is currently residing at St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison, New Jersey, awaiting his perfect match.
Chief’s story began in Louisiana, where he lived as part of a pack of stray dogs. Tragically, in November 2022, he was mistaken for a wild animal and shot in the leg, necessitating amputation. He was then taken to the Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter, where he also received treatment for heartworm. The combination of his injury and illness made finding a home in Louisiana difficult.

In a fortunate turn of events, Chief was transported to New Jersey in January 2023 through the efforts of Greater Good Charities, a Seattle-based organization working to reduce euthanasia rates in overcrowded shelters. He was welcomed by St. Hubert’s and placed in a foster home, where he's currently thriving.

According to staff at both Lafourche Parish Animal Shelter and St. Hubert’s, Chief is a friendly and affectionate dog who has never met a stranger. He navigates effortlessly on three legs, walks well on a leash, and enjoys being close to people. His foster parent describes him as a funny, sweet dog with a youthful spirit, belying his graying muzzle. They also note his handsome appearance, which often elicits compliments from those who meet him. Chief even exhibits gentlemanly behavior, often sitting politely outside rooms while waiting for his foster parent.

St. Hubert’s has a robust transport program, partnering with over 90 organizations since August 2016. They've successfully relocated over 20,000 animals across the country, connecting deserving pets with loving homes.
