Roberts, a Tony-Award nominated actor, frequently collaborated with Woody Allen, often portraying the director's close friend on screen. He notably appeared in films like "Stardust Memories," "A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy," "Hannah and Her Sisters," and "Radio Days." Beyond the silver screen, Roberts' connection with Allen extended to the stage, appearing in Allen's Broadway productions "Don’t Drink the Water" in 1966 and "Play it Again, Sam" in 1969, later reprising his roles in the film adaptations.

Born in New York City on October 22, 1939, to radio and television announcer Ken Roberts, Roberts developed a passion for acting early in life. He honed his craft at the High School of Music and Art in New York and later graduated from Northwestern University. His Broadway debut came in 1962 with "Something About a Soldier," and his stage career flourished with roles in productions such as "Barefoot in the Park," "Promises, Promises," and "Cabaret." One of his most significant Broadway achievements was in Charles Busch's comedy "The Tale of the Allergist's Wife."

Interestingly, despite their fruitful collaboration, Roberts initially faced rejection in his attempts to work with Allen, having auditioned unsuccessfully four times for the playwright's "Don’t Drink the Water." It was Roberts' performance replacing Robert Redford in "Barefoot in the Park" that finally convinced Allen of his talent.

Beyond his work with Allen, Roberts contributed to other notable films, including "Serpico" and "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three." He received two Tony Award nominations, for "How Now, Dow Jones" and "Play It Again, Sam." In his memoir, "Do You Know Me?" Roberts reflected on his fortunate life and career, stating, "I’ve never been particularly lucky at card games. I’ve never hit a jackpot. But I have been extremely lucky in life."
