Tiffany Chen, partner of Robert De Niro and mother of his seventh child, has opened up about her experience facing public scrutiny after news of their relationship and her recent childbirth became public. In an interview with Gayle King on "CBS Mornings," Chen addressed the criticism she received regarding her appearance and demeanor.
Chen acknowledged seeing comments about her appearing "tired," "somber," or "unhappy." She expressed frustration with these remarks, emphasizing that people shouldn't make assumptions about her life or their relationship. "Mind your own business a bit," she stated, advocating for understanding and respect for personal circumstances.
Chen revealed that the perceived unhappiness was due to her developing Bell's palsy after giving birth to her daughter, Gia. This neurological condition affects facial muscles and caused her face to "droop." She initially dismissed the symptoms, attributing them to fluid retention or medication from her C-section. However, her condition worsened, and she eventually received a Bell's palsy diagnosis. She described the experience as having her "whole face melted on itself."
Chen shared the challenges of communicating and interacting with her newborn due to the condition. She was concerned about her appearance affecting her daughter and expressed relief as her symptoms gradually improved. Chen praised De Niro's support throughout the ordeal, noting his reassurances despite the visible changes in her face.
While she continues to experience some lingering effects, such as eye sensitivity, Chen remains positive and focused on raising her daughter. She shared that baby Gia already has a favorite De Niro movie – the one playing in the delivery room during her birth.
