Pope Francis Diagnosed with Pneumonia, Remains in Good Spirits

The Vatican announced on Tuesday that Pope Francis has been diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia, affecting both lungs. Despite the diagnosis, the 88-year-old pontiff remains in good spirits and even received Holy Communion earlier in the day. Medical evaluations, including lab tests and chest X-rays, paint a "complex" medical situation, according to a Vatican statement. The Pope's condition stems from a polymicrobial infection, complicating treatment due to underlying bronchiectasis and asthmatiform bronchitis. A CT scan confirmed the pneumonia diagnosis, necessitating additional medication.

This hospitalization follows Pope Francis' admission to Gemelli Hospital last week for bronchitis treatment, a condition that can sometimes progress to pneumonia, a more severe lung infection. Earlier this week, medical professionals identified a polymicrobial respiratory tract infection, indicating a blend of viruses, bacteria, and potentially other microorganisms in his respiratory system. The Pope's medical history includes a partial lung removal at age 21 due to pleurisy, an inflammation of the lung membranes.

In recent years, the Pope has faced various health challenges, undergoing surgeries in 2021 and 2023 and managing persistent knee problems that require him to use a wheelchair. Despite his current illness and medical advice to rest, Pope Francis maintained a demanding schedule, including an outdoor Mass for the armed forces on February 9th, even with breathing difficulties. The Vatican News reported that the Pope rested well Monday night. Due to his health, Archbishop Rino Fisichella will preside over the Jubilee of Deacons Mass this Sunday in the Pope's place.

The Vatican has been receiving an outpouring of support for the Pope, including well wishes, drawings, and cards, especially from children in the hospital's pediatric oncology ward. The duration of the Pope's hospitalization remains undetermined.
