Stec Enters Race for Stefanik's Congressional Seat, Highlighting Experience and Electability

New York State Senator Dan Stec, a Republican and Navy veteran, has officially announced his candidacy for Congress, aiming to succeed Rep. Elise Stefanik in New York's 21st Congressional District. A special election will be held upon Stefanik's departure to become the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

In a December 24th interview with WWNY, Stec emphasized his experience representing the district in Albany for the past 12 years, expressing confidence in his ability to transition to Washington. He believes his deep roots in the North Country and high name recognition make him the most electable candidate to retain the seat for the Republican party.

Stec's state senate district falls within Stefanik's current congressional district, bolstering his argument for familiarity with the constituents. He highlighted his past electoral success, having garnered nearly half the votes Stefanik received in her re-election bid. He expressed pride in his legislative record and principles, contrasting them with potential opponents who might have votes they need to "explain."

Stec's competition includes Sticker Mule CEO Anthony Constantino, a political newcomer known for a prominent "Vote for Trump" sign. Constantino is self-funding his campaign with a substantial investment. Other potential Republican contenders include Assemblymen Robert Smullen and Christopher Tague, and Rensselaer County Executive Steven McLaughlin. On the Democratic side, possible candidates include Assemblyman Billy Jones and previous Stefanik challengers Matt Castelli and Paula Collins.

The nominees for both parties will be selected by party chairs within the district, bypassing a traditional primary election.
