In a time-honored tradition spanning over two centuries, the mayor of San Pedro Huamelula, Oaxaca, Victor Hugo Sosa, recently married a caiman, a reptile resembling an alligator. This unique ceremony, conducted last Friday, symbolizes a pact between the indigenous Chontal and Huave communities and is believed to usher in good fortune.
The 7-year-old caiman, affectionately known as "princess girl," was the star of the event. Prior to the ceremony, she was adorned in vibrant attire and paraded through the town, held and celebrated by locals. For the wedding itself, she donned a white bridal gown.

Mayor Sosa, representing a Chontal king, and the caiman, symbolizing a Huave princess, were united in a ritual held at the town hall. Photos captured the moment Sosa kissed the caiman's snout, which had been carefully bound to prevent any unintended bites.

Following the ceremony, the townspeople rejoiced, dancing with the reptile bride to traditional music. Mayor Sosa expressed his joy, stating, "We are happy because we celebrate the union of two cultures. People are content." He also emphasized the importance of love in the symbolic union, saying, "I accept responsibility because we love each other. That is what is important. You can't have a marriage without love... I yield to marriage with the princess girl."

This unique tradition highlights the rich cultural heritage of San Pedro Huamelula and the enduring belief in the power of symbolic rituals to bring prosperity and unity.
