During a recent game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Miami Marlins third base coach Jody Reed suffered a fractured lower right leg after being hit by a foul ball. The incident occurred in the third inning when Marlins batter Jesús Sánchez fouled off a fastball from Cardinals pitcher Dakota Hudson. The ball, traveling at 92 mph, struck Reed's leg before he had much time to react.
Although Reed initially walked off the field seemingly unfazed, he was subsequently replaced by quality control coach Griffin Benedict. Marlins manager Skip Schumaker later confirmed that X-rays revealed the fracture. This injury comes amidst a challenging six-game losing streak for the Marlins, who have struggled since the All-Star break. Despite holding a wild-card spot earlier in the season, the team is now fighting to maintain its postseason position.
The Marlins, who are set to face the Colorado Rockies next, are hoping to turn their fortunes around. Reed, who had a successful 11-year playing career in Major League Baseball, joined the Marlins coaching staff this year after managing in the minor leagues for the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers.
