Former New York Mets pitcher Luis Severino has agreed to a three-year contract with the Oakland Athletics, marking a significant moment for the traditionally cost-conscious franchise. The deal, reportedly worth $67 million, surpasses any previous contract in Athletics history, exceeding the $66 million agreement with Eric Chavez from 2005-2010.
Severino is coming off a resurgent 2024 season with the Mets, where he started 31 games and maintained a 3.91 ERA, striking out 161 batters. This marked his first complete season since 2018, having battled injuries in the intervening years.

The 30-year-old right-hander began his MLB career with the New York Yankees in 2015, quickly achieving success with an All-Star selection in 2017 after recording 230 strikeouts.

Following a one-year stint with the Mets, where he went 11-7 and earned $15 million including performance bonuses, Severino entered free agency. He declined a $21.05 million qualifying offer from the Mets, granting them an extra draft pick while costing the A's one of theirs.

Over his career, Severino boasts a 65-44 record with a 3.81 ERA across 156 starts and 16 relief appearances for both the Yankees and Mets.
