Justice Clarence Thomas' Frequent Swearing-In of Trump Officials Raises Eyebrows

CNN's Dana Bash and her panel recently discussed the noteworthy trend of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas administering oaths to numerous Trump administration officials. Bash highlighted the unusual nature of this, observing Thomas presiding over ceremonies at the Supreme Court, the White House, and even his private residence.

Bash commented on the symbolism of Thomas' involvement, stating, "It's not that there's anything inherently wrong with it, it's just what it represents. I don't recall many instances of Cabinet officials being sworn in by a Supreme Court Justice." CNN analyst Joan Biskupic added that traditionally, the Vice President of the United States conducts these ceremonies.

One recent example cited was Attorney General Pam Bondi's swearing-in at the Oval Office, where Thomas administered the oath before an audience of Bondi's family and friends.

During her confirmation hearing, Bondi, a former Florida prosecutor and state attorney general, emphasized her commitment to leading a Justice Department free from political influence. She pledged to eliminate "partisanship and weaponization" within the department.

The increased attention on Justice Thomas also stems from recent reports concerning trips he and his wife, Virginia, took to Bali in 2019, funded by conservative businessman Harlan Crow. Thomas maintains that he has adhered to disclosure guidelines throughout his tenure.
