Following a contentious city council meeting, Hamtramck, Michigan has prohibited the display of Pride flags on public property. Two commissioners who previously flew the flag on city grounds were dismissed from the Hamtramck Human Relations Commission for defying a newly established resolution.

The city council defended its decision, emphasizing its commitment to impartiality and the rule of law. Council member Khalil Refai stated that the commissioners breached the public's trust by disregarding the resolution. This resolution, passed earlier in June, stripped the commission of its authority to display flags on city property.

The flag ban stems from objections raised by religious groups who oppose the ideology associated with the Pride flag. Council member Nayeem Choudhury underscored the city's desire to respect the religious freedoms of its residents. Mayor Amer Ghalib reiterated the city's stance of neutrality, explaining that flags representing any religious, racial, ethnic, or sexual orientation group are disallowed, with exceptions made for the American, Michigan, Hamtramck, POW/MIA, and a flag representing the nationalities of Hamtramck's diverse citizenry.

The June meeting also featured a noteworthy incident involving a woman wearing a clown nose who satirized the flag debate. It's important to note that the ban only applies to public property and does not restrict flag displays on private premises.
