Curtis Schmitt Jr., a former appointee to the Wisconsin Board of Veterans Affairs, has been sentenced to three years in prison followed by three years of supervised release for possession of child pornography. Schmitt, 39, was convicted in May on three counts related to the crime. The sentencing took place on Friday.
Schmitt's appointment to the veterans board came in 2019 by Governor Tony Evers and was subsequently confirmed by the state senate. However, he resigned from his position in March 2022, prior to being formally charged with the possession of child pornography on January 23, 2022.
The investigation began in December 2021 when authorities discovered that illicit images, including two photos and a video depicting child pornography, had been uploaded to a Dropbox account linked to Schmitt's email address. According to the criminal complaint, Schmitt confessed to police about his addiction to adult pornography and admitted to occasionally receiving and downloading child pornography.
The Wisconsin Board of Veterans Affairs, in collaboration with the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, plays a crucial role in developing benefits programs for veterans in Milwaukee by establishing administrative rules. The board also reviews and approves recommendations and resolutions put forth by various veteran organizations within the state.
