Former 'Star Wars' Child Actor Jake Lloyd Shares Positive Mental Health Update

Jake Lloyd, known for portraying young Anakin Skywalker in the 1999 film "Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace," recently provided an encouraging update on his mental health journey following a schizophrenia diagnosis. In a conversation with "Star Wars: Timelines" co-author Clayton Sandell, the 35-year-old Lloyd and his mother, Lisa Lloyd, discussed his progress after an 18-month stay at a Southern California inpatient mental health facility.

Sandell's previous reporting for Scripps News revealed that Lloyd entered treatment after a "full-blown psychotic break" in March 2023. He is now residing at a rehabilitation center where he continues treatment with greater autonomy. Lloyd expressed feeling "pretty good" and acknowledged the importance of ongoing therapy and medication. "I can now accept taking on continued treatment, and therapy, and my meds," he stated, emphasizing the support he's received.

Lisa Lloyd previously disclosed that her son also manages anosognosia, a condition affecting awareness of one's own neurological or psychiatric state, which initially hindered his willingness to accept medication. Lloyd now describes his medication as a crucial "cushion," explaining, "I don’t have the time for feeling volatile."

Reflecting on his treatment experience, Lloyd believes reaching "rock bottom" was a turning point, enabling him to genuinely engage with therapy, medication, and his diagnosis. His mother expressed optimism about his progress, stating it's a "big relief" for the family. She highlighted his dedication to his treatment and their collective appreciation for his efforts.

Lisa clarified that Lloyd's childhood role in "The Phantom Menace" was not a factor in his mental health challenges or his departure from acting, attributing his schizophrenia to a family history on his father's side. She also protected him from the negative reactions to the film upon its release. Lloyd expressed positive memories of his time on set and remains a fan of the franchise, enjoying classic "Star Wars" video games and looking forward to celebrating May the Fourth with his mother.
