Former New York State Senator Alessandra Biaggi recently sparked online discussion regarding her significant student loan debt, which stands at $206,000 despite having made payments for 11 years. This revelation comes after news surfaced last summer of Biaggi and her husband purchasing a $1.14 million home.
Biaggi, who served a three-year term representing New York's 34th district, shared her student loan journey on Twitter, explaining that she graduated from Fordham Law School in 2012 with $180,000 in debt and has since paid off two loans entirely. The timing of her disclosure coincided with the Supreme Court's decision to strike down President Biden's student loan forgiveness program.
The purchase of the three-bedroom, two-bathroom home in an upscale suburban area of Bedford, New York, last July marked a significant upgrade from her previous residence, a condo valued at $691,006 in Pelham, according to reports. This substantial investment drew attention in light of her ongoing student loan obligations.
The Supreme Court's decision to block Biden's plan, which aimed to provide relief to millions of borrowers, has further fueled the conversation around student debt. The plan would have canceled up to $10,000 in federal student loan debt for eligible borrowers and up to $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients.
Biaggi's situation has drawn mixed reactions on social media, with some questioning her financial priorities. Some users suggested she should have prioritized paying down her debt before purchasing the expensive home, while others emphasized personal responsibility for loan agreements.
