Cal Yee Farm LLC of Suisun Valley, California, recently had a recall of several chocolate and yogurt-covered products, along with trail mix and toffee, escalated to a Class I designation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This highest level of recall signifies a serious health risk, potentially life-threatening, for individuals with allergies to milk, soy, wheat, sesame, FD&C #6, or almonds. The recalled items were distributed across nine states – California, Arizona, Virginia, New Mexico, Texas, Tennessee, Oregon, Ohio, and Pennsylvania – as well as through the company's online store.
The specific products affected include Cal Yee's Dark Chocolate Almonds, Tropical Trail Mix, Cajun Sesame Hot Sticks, New Orleans Hot Mix, Dark Chocolate Raisins, Dark Chocolate Apricots, Yogurt Coated Almonds, and Dark Chocolate Walnuts. Undeclared milk prompted the recall for most of these items. However, the Cajun Sesame Hot Sticks and New Orleans Hot Mix were recalled due to undeclared wheat and soybean oil. While the initial recall also included fruit baskets, butter toffee products, and a mango with chili product, these are not currently part of the Class I designation.
The FDA's recall classification stems from an inspection of Cal Yee Farm's facility, revealing that products with these allergens were packaged without proper disclosure. Although no related illnesses have been reported yet, consumers with relevant allergies are urged to discard or return these products for a refund. This recall comes at a time when a viral video featuring food content creator Shelby Austin has garnered over 1.7 million views, showcasing the use of a candle warmer to melt chocolate, highlighting the importance of food safety practices.
