Chilean National Arrested in Texas with Radio Jamming Device After Burglary

A 22-year-old Chilean national, Ignacio Castillo Contreras, was apprehended in West University Place, Texas, following a residential burglary. His arrest uncovered a concerning detail: Contreras possessed a radio frequency jamming device that disrupted local law enforcement communications.

The device, found in Contreras' backpack, interfered with officers' body cameras, key fobs, and handheld radios within its range. This interference prevented officers from securely locking their patrol vehicles and communicating effectively during the incident.

Tech expert Juan Guevara Torres commented on the sophistication of the device, suggesting that its user possessed tactical knowledge of its operation and placement. This raised concerns about the potential misuse of such technology by individuals with malicious intent.

Former Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg echoed these concerns, highlighting the dangerous implications of criminals, particularly those with harmful intentions, using such devices to disrupt law enforcement response.

Contreras, who admitted to being in Houston for only a few months and residing in a hotel, faces charges of residential burglary and interfering with a government-licensed radio frequency. His non-citizen status adds another layer of complexity to the case.
