A remarkable discovery in Trento, Italy, is reshaping our understanding of the region's pre-Roman past. Archaeologists have unearthed a sprawling necropolis, or "city of the dead," dating back to the Iron Age (9th-6th centuries BC). This ancient burial ground, remarkably preserved by centuries of flooding, offers a unique glimpse into the funerary practices and social structures of the era.
Located near the Adige River in northern Italy, the necropolis was situated within a former riverbed. Recurring floods, while initially disruptive, ultimately entombed the site in layers of sediment, creating an unintentional time capsule. This fortuitous preservation has allowed researchers to meticulously document the layout and evolution of the necropolis.
A defining feature of the necropolis is the presence of numerous funerary steles – upright stone slabs serving as grave markers.
