Trump Defends Handling of Classified Documents in Exclusive Interview with Bret Baier

In a recent exclusive interview with Fox News' Bret Baier, former President Donald Trump addressed the controversy surrounding his handling of classified documents after leaving office. The interview, which aired in two parts on "Special Report," covered a range of topics related to the 37 federal charges brought against him, including willful retention of national defense information, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and false statements. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

A key point of contention revolves around Trump's explanation for not promptly returning the documents stored at his Mar-a-Lago estate to the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). Trump maintained that he was engaged in discussions with NARA and intended to return the materials after retrieving personal items from the boxes. He emphasized his busy schedule as a reason for the delay, stating his desire to personally review the contents before handing them over. He also claimed this was a departure from standard procedure for former presidents.

Baier challenged Trump's account, citing the indictment's assertion that Trump directed aides to move boxes even after receiving a subpoena. Trump reiterated his need to separate personal belongings from the official documents, explaining that the boxes contained a mix of items. He insisted that his intention was always to cooperate with NARA after sorting through the contents.
