Toronto Tempo: WNBA's Newest Team Unveils Name, Logo, and Vision

The WNBA is expanding its horizons with the introduction of the Toronto Tempo, set to begin playing in 2026. Over 10,000 suggestions poured in from the public, contributing to the team's name and vibrant brand identity, deeply rooted in the energy of Canada.

The Tempo's logo is a visual representation of the team's core principles. Its forward-leaning design symbolizes progress, while the combination of sharp angles and smooth curves reflects the team's dynamic nature. Six lines are incorporated within the logo – five representing the players on the court and the sixth symbolizing the fans, recognized as the essential 'sixth player.'

Toronto Tempo President, Teresa Resch, emphasized the significance of the name, stating, "Tempo is pace. It’s speed. It’s a heartbeat. And it’s what you feel when you step into the streets of this city, and in the energy of the people who call Canada home. As Canada’s WNBA team, I know the Tempo will set our own pace, move at a championship cadence, and inspire people across this country."

Resch further elaborated on how the Tempo name encapsulates the anticipated fan experience, stating, "Tempo reflects what fans can expect from this team – including, of course, the in-game experience at the arena. The sounds of the court. The beat of the music. The passion of the fans around you and the intensity of the players on the floor. Capturing all that energy, excitement, and feeling was crucial as we chose the name for Canada’s WNBA team."

The Tempo are joining the WNBA as the 14th team, alongside the Portland expansion team. The Toronto Tempo will play their home games at Toronto’s Coca-Cola Coliseum beginning in 2026. The Golden State Valkyries, the league's 13th franchise, will hold an expansion draft on Friday, their first in 16 years. Another expansion draft is scheduled for next year for both the Tempo and Portland.
