The Running Back Market: NFL Stars Seek Fair Compensation

Saquon Barkley's impressive 2,000-yard rushing season debut with the Philadelphia Eagles and subsequent Super Bowl LIX appearance has ignited discussions about the value of running backs in the NFL. Despite his on-field success, Barkley's $12.583 million annual salary raises questions about the current market for this crucial position.

Running backs often set the offensive tone for their teams, yet their compensation doesn't always reflect their impact. Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs, who also had a standout season, believes the running back market needs a boost. Speaking at Super Bowl LIX radio row, Jacobs emphasized the need for upward adjustment, particularly for top performers like Bijan Robinson, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Kyren Williams, whose rookie contracts are nearing completion.

Jacobs highlighted the accomplishments of other running backs like Derrick Henry, Joe Mixon, and Christian McCaffrey, arguing that their contributions warrant better financial recognition. He pointed out that Mixon, despite accumulating 1,312 scrimmage yards for the Houston Texans, earns considerably less than some tight ends. Even Henry's two-year, $16 million deal with the Ravens seems modest compared to other positions.

Jacobs himself signed a four-year, $48 million contract with the Packers, showcasing his value to the team. However, the disparity between running back salaries and those of other positions remains a point of contention.

The question remains whether the running back market will finally align with player performance and contributions, or if teams will continue to undervalue the position. While in New Orleans for the Super Bowl, Jacobs partnered with USAA to surprise Sergeant Major Kevin Bennett, a 34-year Marine Corps veteran and Packers fan, with Super Bowl tickets. This gesture reflects Jacobs' appreciation for military service, a value instilled in him by his grandfather and uncle who also served in the armed forces.
