A prominent Tennessee orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Benjamin Mauck, 43, was tragically killed in a targeted shooting at Campbell Clinic Orthopaedics in Collierville on Tuesday. Police identified the suspect as 29-year-old Larry Pickens, who allegedly waited several hours before shooting Dr. Mauck inside an exam room. Collierville Police Chief Dale Lane stated the attack appeared to be a one-on-one interaction and that Pickens did not harm other patients or staff present at the clinic. The suspect fled the scene but was apprehended shortly after without incident. He now faces charges of first-degree murder and aggravated assault, with bond set at $1.2 million.

While the motive remains unclear, reports suggest Pickens may have made prior threats to a clinic employee. Dr. Mauck, a respected specialist in elbow, hand, and wrist surgery, was highly regarded by his patients, boasting a near-perfect rating based on hundreds of reviews. He also led the congenital hand clinic at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. A recent feature in Memphis Magazine highlighted Dr. Mauck's recognition as one of the 2023 Top Doctors in Memphis. He leaves behind a wife, Rhiannon, and two young children. Campbell Clinic closed all its locations Wednesday to mourn the loss.
